Premier resort opens in northern Saskatchewan

ELK RIDGE RESORT, SK—There were nay-sayers galore two decades ago when entrepreneur Arne Petersen, told people he planned to build a world class, four season resort and golf course on thick brush and swampland just outside Prince Albert National Park in northern Saskatchewan.

But those people ate their words last month, as Petersen opened a $12 million hotel and convention centre at Elk Ridge Resort.

The 34-room hotel has conference facilities, a distinctive dining room, lounge, recreation facilities including swimming pool, hot tub and waterslide along with the Salacia Spa.
Airline Hotels & Resorts will be managing the property.

The estimated cost of the resort development to date is between $60 million and $70 million, with Petersen investing about $10 million of his own money, according to an article in the The Star Phoenix. “I envisaged the community at Elk Ridge to become to Waskesiu what Canmore is to Banff,”  Petersen said in the article.

The resort will bring a welcome boost to the local economy by employing 150 people during the summer and 60 year round.

The resort also includes residents in the Estate Homes, Eagle View Villa Condominiums and the Fairway Townhouses.

Construction is underway on the final phase of the condominiums and future residential development of the site includes possible fractional ownership opportunities—all spearheaded by Petersen’s daughter, and vice president and development & asset manager, Debby Klarenbach. Residential lots at Elk Ridge cost a relatively modest $140,000 and $250,000.

The resort now includes the golf course and Pro Shop, guest cottages, townhomes, an RV Park, the new hotel, The Eagle Pub and Grill and staff accommodation facilities.
