ORHMA joins western insurance deal

TORONTO—The Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association has joined with Western groups to offer members lower-priced commercial insurance tailored to their needs.
“It’s a great program,” ORHMA president and CEO Tony Elenis told CLN. “We really hope it will add value for our members.”

The ORHMA says in a release that its “protected self insurance” program (PSIP) “offers savings, full insurance protection and the potential for year-end returns of premiums.”
In self insurance programs, a calculated amount of money is set aside to compensate for the potential future loss. Money is set aside using actuarial and insurance information so that the amount set aside is enough to cover the future uncertain loss.
However, the ORHMA program offers more complete protection to the member, because an excess insurer will pay claims that are not covered by the self insured portion.
Members of the Manitoba Hotel Association, Saskatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Association, Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association, and British Columbia Hotel Association are already subscribing to the program.

The new Hospitality Insurance Program belongs to these industry groups and is administered by HED, a company that has specialized in association PSIPs since 1978.
It administers assurance plans for companies and groups such as Sobeys of Canada, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Canadian Rental Association and the Association of Manitoba Municipalities.

ORHMA members signing up for insurance before Dec. 15 will get a 15 per cent rate reduction.

SHHA warns hoteliers of scam

REGINA—This happened in one of the Saskatchewan Hotel and Hospitality Association hotels in Saskatchewan.

A person called the front desk and stated he was from the hotel chain’s IT department.  He was very demanding and would not let the clerk off the phone.  He demanded the guest’s credit card numbers that were staying there that night.  The clerk gave out the numbers.
The RCMP were called and they contacted other hotels in the area.  The hotel contacted guests whose information was compromised.

Bill S-226 call to action

REGINA, OTTAWA—The SHHA and the Hotel Association of Canada are deeply concerned about Bill S-226, which is making its way through the Federal Senate.  If passed, the Bill would amend the Criminal Code to make it illegal for provincial governments to operate video lottery terminals (VLTs) in bars, taverns and restaurants.  They would only be allowed in race tracks, casinos and betting  theatres.  This Bill would have a crippling affect on all VLT operators in Saskatchewan and other provinces.

The associations asked SHHA members for help in contacting the six Saskatchewan senators using a letter they provided.
