Camosun College,Vancouver Island, Hotel and Restaurant Management
No. of students: about 40 full time students each year.
Program type: 2-year Diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management, with a Co-operative Education designation. Graduates are then eligible for direct 3rd year entry into an articulated variety of Canadian and in International Hotel degree programs.
Strengths: Strong focus on applied hands-on education with two mandatory 4 & 5 month Co-op work terms, and the stand alone showpiece Dunlop House Fine Dining Restaurant. Strong alumni network.
Graduate careers: Majority pursue careers with International Corporate Hotel Chains, such as Fairmont and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in positions ranging from Corporate Department Heads, and General Managers to successful entrepreneurs.
Douglas College, Coquitlam, Hotel and Restaurant Management Program
No. Students: 110 students
Program type: 2-year Diploma
Strengths: At Douglas, we have small classes, dedicated experienced instructors, leading simulations, and an extensive list of articulations with universities in Canada and globally.
Graduate careers: Our graduates generally end up in hotels and or free standing restaurants or in degree programs.
North Island College, Campbell River, Tourism & Hospitality Mangagement Diploma
No. of students: 25
Program type: 2-year Diploma that articulates with numerous British Columbia and Canadian universities offering Hospitality and Tourism Degrees.
Strengths: We are the only program in British Columbia offering a Dual Diploma in both Tourism and Hospitality and in a maritime resort community setting.
Graduate careers: A wide variety of career streams find our students working internationally as well as close home in supervisory, managerial and entrepreneurial Tourism and Hospitality ventures.
Royal Roads, Victoria, International Hotel Management
No. Students: BA program - 26 students; MA program approx. 20
Program type: For our undergraduate program students receive a BA in International Hotel Management. It is a degree completion program that takes 12 months to complete. We don't offer years one and two so as consequence we have formalized a number of transfer agreements with college partners across Canada, allowing their graduates to enroll in our program.Our graduate students receive a MA in Tourism Management. This consists of 4 certificates that take two years to complete.
Strengths: These include the length of time required to complete an undergraduate degree (12 months); focus on international aspect of industry (approx. 1/2 of this year's students have found employment internationally); the program themes around international, leadership, sustainability and team; and the diversity in the classroom - we attract students from across Canada and around the world.
For our graduate program, the certificate model allows students to tackle components of the MA when it is convenient for them. The average age of our students in the graduate program is 39 so the classroom experience is very much interactive. Consistently we are ranked as one of the top universities in Canada for active and collaborative learning (this ranking is by our students). Student have the opportunity to complete the program in a blended model - short term residencies (10 days) followed by on line modules. People in the industry like the model because they don't have to give up their careers to join our program.
Graduate careers: This year's students are going to Aleenta resorts -Thailand, Ayers Rock Resort - Australia, Butterfield and Robinson - Toronto/Europe, Jury Hotels - England, Four Seasons Hotels - England, IHG Hotels - China and Fairmont Hotels - various locations. Last year we had students go to Grand Hyatt Taipei, Topas Eco Lodge - Vietnam and Langham Hotel - London.
Selkirk College, Nelson, Resort and Hotel Management
No. of students: 25
Program type: 2-year Diploma
Strengths: Hands on practical experience in a working dining room.We also facilitate numerous community special events where the students work directly with clients planning, organizing, setting up and ensuring events run smoothly. Practical, real industry simulation assignments. Students work directly with other programs, specifically the professional cooking program where they are able to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of food service operations. Great academic program to match the practical experience.
Graduate careers: Approximately 35 per cent transfer to university to complete a Bachelors degree. Approximately 40 per cent go on to work for big brand hotel companies The rest-independent business owners or other industries.
Vancouver Community College, Diploma in Hospitality Management
No. of students: Graduates 100+ students a year from a population of approximately 400 students. Feeds approximately 30 student per year into VCC's Bachelor of Hospitality Management degree program.
Type of program: 2-year Diploma. Recognized as a feeder program by University of Victoria, University of Calgary, La Trobe University and other well established degree offering institutions.
Strengths: Offers a content rich program with an emphasis on practical skills, e.g. Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Management - Food Production Principles, Restaurant Operations, Food & Beverage Services. Recognized for ability to align program with alternative industry partners, e.g. cruise ship industry, assisted living, casino management, etc.
Graduate careers: Program has a very high employment rate, most students have jobs to go to even before graduation.
Vancouver Community College, Bachelor of Hospitality Management
No. of students: 100+
Type of program: Well established two-plus-two degree program - daytime and Executive Cohort streams.
Strengths: The degree program is fed by a very strong/vibrant Diploma program - the potential of 300 applicants per year. It is also fed by a number of metro Vancouver colleges, e.g. Douglas College, and miscellaneous public/private colleges from Ontario, e.g. Fanshawe, Cambrian. Highly skilled and well educated faculty - also intimately connected with both academic and industry networks. Flexible, accessible and multi faceted program including E-portfolios (continuous work experience through technology). HOTS (simulation), Moodle (online learning management system), Philosopher's Café (social corporate responsibility), and Internships (industry/academic partnerships).
Graduate careers: Graduates of BHM (and HM Diploma) providing industry (hospitality) with skilled workers at a time when a critical labour shortage exists and there is a projected need for 85,000 workers.
SAIT, Calgary School of Hospitality and Tourism, Hospitality Management Program
No. Students: 160/year
Program type: 2-year Diploma
Strengths: All students provided with laptops. International study opportunities including a semester at Box Hill Institute, Melbourne, Australia, or food study tours overseas. Students responsible for special events execution during fourth semester.
Graduate careers: In various sectors, including hotels, resorts and restaurants, attractions management, club management and spa management.
University of Calgary Bachelor of Hotel and Resort Management (BHRM)
No. of Students: Yearly intake of 20-25. Total of approx. 50 students.
Type of program: 2 year program. Students receive an undergraduate, Bachelor degree.
Strengths: This innovative program integrates the technical knowledge and practical experience of a two-year post-secondary diploma in Hospitality Management (or equivalent) with two years of University of Calgary studies. This unique combination gives students a solid foundation in leading-edge management principles, develops analytical and communication skills and offers global perspectives on the hospitality and tourism industry. Our tourism department is designated as a World Tourism Education and Research Centre (WTERC) by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN-WTO).
Graduate Careers: Graduates are prepared for leadership in the world of international tourism and hospitality. Many graduates are hired by the hospitality industry, with many holding senior job titles such as associate general manager, operations manager, and department head. BHRM graduates are employed in many sectors of the tourism industry including hotels, airlines, conventions and events management, destination management, food services, travel trade, recreation and arts, and real estate development.
Science & Technology (SIAST) Kelsey Campus, Saskatoon, Hotel & Restaurant Administration Program
No. of students: 30 per year
Program type: 2-year Diploma. 2-year articulation agreement with University of Calgary Bachelor of Hotel Resort Management and Royal Roads Bachelor of International Hotel Management.
Strengths: Our program has a high practical component, so when our students graduate they can step right into operations and move up quickly within the organization. We offer a capstone class - Wine & Dine - that is very well known in the city. The students plan and design the menus, design the table top components, create the wine & cocktail lists, serve and cook the meals - including flambés and tablesides. This is done with students who are not cooking students.
We are also active in Skills Canada and have achieved 2 Bronze Medals, (Alberta 2006 & PEI 2008) a Silver Medal (Ontario 2010), and a Gold (Saskatchewan 2007).
Graduate careers: Our graduates end up throughout the province as Front Office Managers, Assistant General Managers, Catering Managers, Director of Sales, Junior Sales Managers, Restaurant Owners and Managers, Brewery Reps, Wine Reps.

Assiniboine Community College Hotel and Restaurant Management
No. of students: 25 first year and second year students
Type of Program: 2-year Diploma; however, students have the option to exit after one year with a certificate in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
Strengths: We are confident that our program meets the standards of similar programs in Canada, and two important selling features are the articulation agreements we have with University of Calgary, Brandon University, and block transfer agreements with other colleges in Western Canada. Another important feature is the Cooperative Education component of the program (4 and 6-month options) that provides our students with important work experience, resulting in great networking opportunities, and the potential to lead to full-time graduate employment with some of Canada's leading hotel companies.
Graduate careers: Graduates are qualified to enter various careers in the hotel industry, food and beverage sectors, and travel/tourism, including hotels, restaurants, banquet and event management, human resources, rooms division, sales and marketing, and many other divisions of the hospitality industry.

Red River College Winnipeg, Hospitality and Tourism Management
No. of students: 85
Type of program: 24-month Diploma
Strengths: The program is somewhat unique as all students take a generic first year with course work that covers some of the basic areas of discipline in both the Tourism and Hotel Restaurant industries. The first year includes two academic terms and one Co-operative Education term of sixteen weeks each. Students entering second year are asked to choose a major in either Hotel and Restaurant Management or Tourism Management. The second year choice allows students to focus on education more specifically geared to their career goals and interests with the final Co-operative Education term linked to the same goals. Second year is structured the same as the first year time wise. Our program is a "Laptop" based program, all students are provided a laptop, all the necessary software and classrooms are wired for the web. Students also have Wi Fi access. Co-operative Education is mandatory and provides solid link to business and industry partners. This, along with advisory boards, ensure current programming and excellent career opportunities for graduating students. Work placements are local, national and international in all sectors of the Hospitality and Tourism industry.
Graduate careers: Many of our graduates are now employers who hire both Co-op students and graduates. Graduates include: Steven Bartlett GM, Radisson Hotel Winnipeg Downtown.
Algonquin Community College, Ottawa, Hotel Management - Hotel and Restaurant Program
No. of students: 520 full time students per year in this program
Type of Program: 2-year Diploma. We have been approved to start a 4-year degree program in Bachelors in Hospitality & Tourism Management. Start date will be Fall 2011.
Program strengths: Our program has a mandatory requirement for 500 hours of fieldwork. This gives the students hands on experience as well with ensure that they are job ready upon graduation. Student employment rate upon graduation is high because industry will usually seek students that they have placed for fieldwork.
Graduate careers: A wide range of employment opportunities in the global hospitality and tourism industry. Upon graduation students may expect to find career opportunities in accommodation, front desk, guest service/housekeeping, sales and marketing, banquets, transportation, food and beverage, attractions, events and conferences, tourism services, casinos and golf clubs. After a few years of experience, graduates should expect a supervisory or management position with the above sectors of the industry.

Program type: 2 year Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Management Diploma; 3 year Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Administration Advanced Diploma
Strengths: Emphasis is placed on industry-related skills in the first year of study, which are applied during the students' five-month paid summer placement at recognized hotels, resorts and restaurants. The second year will focus on hospitality management principles. These can be applied during the students second five-month paid summer placement, which enhances the possibilities of permanent employment upon graduation. The third year is comprised of the most comprehensive hospitality management curriculum in Canada. Emphasis is placed on developing analytical problem solving and thought process skills. Through case study analysis, practical application and simulation, the learning experience will culminate in the start-up and operation of a student owned and operated hospitality business.
Graduate Careers: The student could begin their career path working in Canada or internationally or they can continue on with advanced educational opportunities through our articulation agreements with Southern New Hampshire University or the University of Guelph. 60 per cent of our graduating administration students pursue degree completion mostly through Southern New Hampshire University

Centennial College, Toronto Hospitality & Tourism Administration; Hotel & Resort Management
Program type: Centennial College offers 3 separate Hotel Management programs: 3-year Hospitality & Tourism Administration (HTA); 2-year Hotel & Resort Management (H&R); and 1 year Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Management Program (post-grad) (HRRM). Hotel management is just a segment within the much broader Hospitality Management Portfolio that we provide. The students earn 3-year or 2-year College Diplomas depending on the program, and a Graduate Certificate from the one year post-graduate Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Management Program.
Strengths: Centennial's Hospitality Management educational program is much broader in scope than simply Hotel Management. In addition, Centennial College is the most culturally diverse college in Ontario and the only college that mandates a Global Citizenship & Equity course in all Diploma programs. Our 15 week internship (4 days per week) provides industry training and skills evaluation period resulting in a work ready employee at completion.

Program type: 2-year Diploma (including 5-month paid Co-op). Articulation agreements with many universities.

Strengths: Small class sizes, 5-month Co-op into the fall months, strong F&B knowledge and applied skills, diverse hotels, motels, Langdon Hall and B&Bs in area. One hour from Stratford, Toronto, Niagara. Students use front office software and dining room touch software in the curriculum.
Program type: 2-year Diploma; 3rd year post graduate
Strengths: These include our location in London, and the experience of hospitality that the students receive. We walk the walk, we have recruiters who come in for summer placements, and we have the only third year post-graduate Concierge Services/Guest Relations program in Canada.

Fleming College, Lindsay, Hospitality Administration - Hotel and Resort
No. of students: 100 (approx.)
Program type: Ontario College Advanced Diploma, 3-year program
Strengths: Employers in the hospitality field. They appreciate the fact that graduates have had a thorough and comprehensive education, preparing them to work effectively as part of a team and as a leader. The program is also notable in that it's a three-year business program-with their management skills, graduates have the opportunity for advancement fairly early on in their careers.
Graduate careers: Grads have found entry-level or supervisory positions with major employers such as Marriott, Fairmont, Delta, Best Western, as well as with many local resorts.
No. of students: September intake is 12 sections of 22 and January Intake 3 sections of 22.
Program type: 2-year Diploma. Upon completion of the program students have the option to apply for the degree program at GBC provided that they have GPA 3 and pass the 5 bridging courses during the summer.
Strengths: Our program has been sponsored by two of the largest hotel companies, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, and Starwood Hotel & Resorts. Due to our location in Toronto downtown, we have established a very close relations with hotel Industry. Our PAC (program advisory committee) members are all from hotel industry and courses are designed to meet industry requirements. All our faculties are highly experienced who come from different department of the hotel. Students have the opportunity to learn the theory and then apply the knowledge in the simulation Lab. Such has Front Office Simulations, Mixology, wine, etc.
Program type: Hospitality Management-Hotel and Resort, 4 semesters; Hospitality Administration-Hotel and Resort, 6 semesters. Both programs receive an Ontario College Diploma, Co-op.
Strengths: We have several field trips to major hotels and resorts each year. We offer the complete 3rd semester in Strasbourg, France and this experience includes work terms at various hotels and properties in Strasbourg. They are housed in a 200 year old castle and take all the same courses our students take on our Barrie campus. We have numerous courses which allow our students to practice management skills through experiential learning. Both of our Hotel and Resort programs have mandatory paid Co-op placement.
Graduate careers: Our graduates end up in almost every sector of our industry and all over the world. They may go into accommodations, product sales , food and beverage etc.
University of Guelph, Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), Major in Hotel and Food Administration; Master of Business Administration (Hospitality and Tourism Management)
No. of students: The Hotel and Food Administration program takes in about 120 students a year. We have about 600 students in the school. The MBA is relatively small - niche focus and runs with about 15-20 a year.
Program type: The undergrad program is 4-years; those electing to take it as Co-op take 5 years. The degree is a Bachelor of Commerce Honour's degree.
The graduate program is a 2 year MBA. It is currently an ‘executive' style program combining short residential with distance learning.
Strengths: The Guelph program at both the undergrad and the MBA is about developing problem-solving, leadership, able to conceptualize, creativity and decision-making skills. Our graduates are ‘thinkers' and are better prepared for higher order interaction. They have a solid business foundation upon which is built specialist knowledge and understanding of service operations management.
Graduate careers: In all sorts of hospitality roles across the country and around the world. Each year we have a number of graduates listed in the OHI's Top 30 under 30. They are in hotels, restaurants, clubs, government, education, various forms of food service operations etc.

Niagara College, Niagara, Hospitality Management - Hotel and Restaurant (Co-op)
No of students: 270 (approx.)
Program type: 2-year Diploma. If students graduate with an overall average of 75 per cent they have an option to bridge into our 4-year Bachelor of Applied Business in Hospitality Operations and receive a Bachelors Degree.
We also have a one year Post Graduate certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Strengths: Front Office Lab with a live PMS system to run through guest service simulations. Programs are taught from a group of individuals with a wealth of current industry experience. Located in the tourism sector of the Niagara region - close to Niagara Falls and Niagara on the lake. Niagara College is also home to programs with focuses in Culinary, Viticulture Esthetics and Hairstyling. We offer a 5 1⁄2 month Co-op. Students do not return until after Thanksgiving, to the benefit of students and industry.
Graduate careers: Various positions within hotel and restaurants. Entry level management with major chains. Other graduates get their BABH, or pursue other Bachelor opportunities or Post Grad opportunities.

Ryerson University, Toronto, The Ted Rogers School of Hospitality
No. of students: The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is one of the largest schools of its kind in Canada, producing some 100 new graduates each year. Approximately 650 students are currently enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Commerce program.
Program type: A dynamic 4-year program leading to a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Strengths: The program covers all business disciplines required to perform in a management, administrative, supervisory or entrepreneurial position. Students participate in fieldwork, case studies, workshops, simulations, seminars and group projects. The results are a practiced understanding of what you study, a clearer picture of industry, and better job prospects.
We are the only university educator serving the industry in the Greater Toronto Area, located on a campus in the heart of downtown Toronto.
Our program is differentiated from others in the country by its strong business management orientation.
The SHTM has a vigorous tradition of industry/academic interaction that supports a two-way flow of knowledge, helps maintain the currency of our curriculum, and provides career-relevant opportunities for applied student learning. Many of our industry partners are SHTM alumni.
We have an actual hotel facility which is operationally "live" to the public during the summer period and serves as a student residence during the academic year.
Graduate careers: Our graduates are business professionals with focused expertise in leadership, management and operation of hospitality/tourism enterprises. Graduates can continue their studies at the graduate level or complete specialized Diplomas from community colleges and private institutions if they choose.

St. Clair College, Windsor, Hospitality - Hotel & Restaurant Management Diploma
No. of students: 75 first years + 60 second year students
Program type: 2-years (4 semesters) Diploma
Strengths: Our program/school is located within the downtown campus, which is also an operational catering and convention center and directly connected with several hotels and walking distance to more hotels, restaurants, Caesars casino, and other hospitality/F&B venues. First Canadian College or Ontario College articulation agreement with the Disney College program (and through Central Michigan University). Fairmont Hotels & Resorts recruits and hires our graduates and takes current students for their SWEP (summer work experience program). Some students enter their leadership training program
Graduate careers: All over the world. Typical areas of employment are resorts, private clubs, hotels, restaurants, F&B Chains - like Tim Horton's etc., Cruise ships, event planning.

Strengths: L'Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ - Quebec Tourism and Hotel Institute) is a government agency entirely devoted to training and research in the hotel, tourism and food service industries. For the past 40 years, the ITHQ has put every effort into achieving excellence in training and research.
Graduate careers: Hotel management positions all around world.
Vatel Québec, Gestion du tourisme et de l'hôtellerie international de Vatel Québec; International Hotel and tourism management
No. of students: In Quebec we have started in 2007, we currently have close to 60 students in our school, but we are part of a network of 25 schools offering the same program, more than 4,000 students.
Program type: 3-year program. The students have the option to receive 3 degrees: AEC from Cégep Saint-Hyacinthe; Bachelor degree for Vatel International; Licence from Université de Perpignan (France) that they can pursue afterwards for a Master's.
Strengths: Vatel has existed for 30 years and started in Paris. In Quebec we have 50 per cent international students which is very unique and a wonderful experience for them. They come from Africa, Europe, South and North America. We have a very unique way of teaching with a lot of practical (50 per cent of the program) in our restaurants and within the facilities of our hotel partners. Students alternate every week between theory and practice during their three years. They also have to do internships, which are usually paid.
Graduate careers: In different countries around the world in entry managerial positions: assistant F &B, assistant reception, housekeeping.
NBCC St. Andrews Campus Hospitality & Tourism Operations
No. of students: 60
Program type: 1-year-students can transfer to university for final 3-years.
Strengths: Students learn to think on their feet, and lead a diverse range of operations while balancing practical actions with creative solutions. Students apply concepts for the successful operation of lodging facilities and food and beverage operations. Students participate in regional conferences and events, and have the opportunity to network, work with industry partners and assist with planning for events such as the Tourism Industry Association of Canada annual conference, Fundy Food Festival, Indulge, the Olympics, and the State of the Province Premier's Address.
Graduate careers: All over the world-we have students in Australia, Mexico, BC, England, Eastern Canada etc.
Cape Breton University, Sydney, Shannon School of Business Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management
No. of students: 100
Program type: 3-year Bachelor degree including 2 industry internships.
Strengths: Our two internships help teach skill areas as well as management areas. Student internships go until the middle of October to the advantage of students and industry.
Graduate careers: Graduates work across Canada and internationally, thanks in part of our large number of international students, in positions from line to supervisor to GM.

Program type: Bachelor of Tourisim and Hospitality Management.
Strengths: The program builds on the strengths of a business education and integrates the theories of tourism development and hospitality management to give the graduate an understanding of the key areas of the industry. Courses are offered on campus and at a distance. Courses may be completed through distance learning on a full-time or part-time basis. Distance options include televised, video cassette and online delivery.
No. of students: Our program is offered at five Nova Scotia Community College campuses and we have a combined annual enrollment of between 150 - 170 students.
Program type: 2-year Diploma
Strengths: Strong focus on applied learning through the use of labs, simulations and partnerships with industry. All Tourism Management students engage in service learning where they meet learning outcomes by applying knowledge and skills in service to the community. All students have an opportunity for an International Service Learning experience in places such as Belize, Tanzania, Spain and Costa Rica. Courses are available through our collaborative learning centres (on each campus) where through video-conferencing and other technologies faculty deliver courses to students at multiple campuses.
Graduate careers: Graduates work locally, provinciall and internationally in hotels, resorts, cruise ships, ferries, visitor information centres, trade centres and tour operators.

Program type: 2-year Diploma, including 500-hour internship.
Strengths: Our program is featured as part of the Culinary Institute of Canada; along with the Culinary Arts, Pastry Arts and Applied Degree in Culinary Operations Programs. It features practical experiences, an Educational Study Tour where students in the 2nd year of the program attend the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) convention.
Graduate careers: Graduates are now more likely move to universities across Canada and internationally to complete their business degree. Others are employed in various sectors of hospitality depending on experience and geographical preference.
Graduates include: Steven Barbour, an owner/operator of Hunter's Ale House and Globe World Flavours in Charlottetown.
College of the North Atlantic, Hospitality Tourism Management
No of students: The program is offered at two sites with one program operating on an alternate year intake. Maximum: 65.
Program type: 2-year Diploma. Students who graduate after year one are eligible to receive a Certificate in Hospitality Services. Students who complete the two year program receive a Diploma in Hospitality Tourism Management.
Strengths: Year one exit point. Students can return to the program at a later date to obtain the Diploma in one additional year. The program has a fairly broad focus providing students with an excellent balance of theoretical and practical skills. Students participate in a six-week work term after year one. The second year of the program provides a strong focus on managerial/supervisory skills. Excellent block transfer agreements with a number of Canadian universities.
Graduate careers: Hotels, restaurants, resorts, government, non-government agencies in hospitality and tourism.
