Gold Keys for Coast

VANCOUVER, BC-Employees at Coast Hotels & Resorts' Edmonton properties were recognized for their outstanding performance in guest service, taking home four Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) 2010 Gold Key Awards in housekeeping, banquet, catering, and accounting categories.

Teresita Acosta, housekeeping room attendant at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel, received the Gold Key Award in the housekeeping category.  Acosta has been with the Coast Edmonton Plaza for 18 years and regularly receives compliments from guests about her meticulous attention to detail.

Carlos Alvarado, banquet captain at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel, took home the Gold Key Award in the banquet category.  Alvarado joined the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel six years ago and soon earned a reputation among his colleagues as "professional, objective, dedicated and knowledgeable."

Jasmina Dean, catering coordinator at the Coast Edmonton East Hotel - Sherwood Park, won the Gold Key Award in the catering category.  As catering coordinator, she won the respect of her coworkers who describe her as upbeat, considerate of other departments and a team player.

Anita Marler, senior accountant at Coast Edmonton House, was also presented with a Gold Key Award.   Marler is one of Coast Hotels' unsung heroes, whose tireless work supporting the Regional Accounting Team helps keep the hotel chain running.  She is known to go out of her way to ensure that guests are happy and enjoy their stay at the hotel.  One guest in particular travelled every year from Africa on business to the University of Alberta.  When he first began staying at the hotel, he was frightened of many things North Americans take for granted-elevators, sliding doors and tall buildings. He needed to be shown how to use these conveniences.  Every day, Anita would ride with him in the elevator or open the stairwell for him. During the summer, she would open his windows for him.  Over time, this guest became more comfortable with his modern surroundings.  To this day, when he stays at the Coast Edmonton House, he still asks for Marler.

"These individuals are great ambassadors of the Coast Hotels & Resorts' brand, and truly exemplify our commitment of providing outstanding guest service," said Graeme Barrit, president of Coast Hotels & Resorts.  "We're all very proud of their work and dedication to our guests and their colleagues."

Rosewood Hotel lowers largest Canadian flag

VANCOUVER-The huge Canadian flag that surrounded the Rosewood Hotel Georgia during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games was removed on Monday May 17, 2010.

The flag became one of the most visible representations of the national pride that helped make the games such a success.

Ken Bowden, director of Hotel Georgia Developments Ltd. said: "Installation of the flag was our way of supporting the games and Canada's athletes.

"We really weren't prepared for the amount of attention it attracted and the amount of positive feedback we received. It made us all very proud." The flag fabric will be put into storage while opportunities to repurpose the material and create a fundraising opportunity for a local charity are investigated.
