Best Western moves the needle in Canada with 20 hotels

PHOENIX—Best Western Hotels is moving the needle in Canada with the addition of 10 new properties in 2009, and 10 more coming in 2010. And two of the hotels to be constructed this year will be Atrea hotels, the chain’s newest design. Three of this year’s hotels are conversion properties, two in Quebec and one in Ontario.  The others are in Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces.

Sandman expanding Signature brand to eight hotels

TORONTO—Sandman Hotels now has three of its upscale Sandman Signature brand hotels, one near Toronto airport, one near Vancouver Airport in Richmond, BC, and a third at Nelsen Lodge in Revelstoke, BC.  A fourth is planned this year for Prince George BC, a fifth is under construction in Langley, BC, and the sixth and seventh and eighth will be in Markham, ON, downtown Kamloops, BC and Edmonton South.

Statistics all show that tourism is up on The Rock

ST. JOHN’S—HVS statistics for the first two months of 2009 show that hotel occupancy in Newfoundland was up 29.1 per cent in February, and 14.5 per cent when January and February stats are combined.   The latest PKF statistics aren’t quite so dramatic—their report shows that Newfoundland occupancy rose by 2.5 per cent year to date in January and February.
