IHG and Choice lead the brand development pipeline.

IHG has 37 hotels in its Canadian development pipeline including three Crowne Plazas, one Hotel Indigo, seven Holiday Inns, 20 Holiday Inn Express, four Staybridge Suites and two Candlewood Suites.

Choice Hotels Canada has 22 properties under development: two Ascend Collection; five Quality, nine Comforts and six Econo Lodges, in all provinces except PEI and Newfoundland.

 

Mid-scale has been growing

Holiday Inn Express added the most new units of any chain over the past year, growing from 64 to 74 units this year, and increasing its number of rooms by 42 per cent.

Four Points by Sheraton added four new Canadian units this year, going from 18 to 22.

Hampton Inn/Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton also added three units this year, rising from 27 to 30 units.

Hilton Garden Inn went from 17 to 19 units. And last month, IHG broke ground for another Hilton Garden Inn in Brampton.

Howard Johnson added six units, growing from 55 to 61 hotels.

And Choice is up two Quality hotels this year, growing from 70 to 72.

 

Luxury segment comeback?

It's no secret that the downturn was particularly hard on the luxury segment. Nevertheless, Marriott did open its new Montreal Aeroport hotel. Westin added its new hotel at Vancouver Airport. And Carlson is up one Radisson this year.

Ramada, which spans the mid-scale and upscale segments, grew by two hotels from 66 to 68 Canadian units.

 

Economy has mixed results

In the economy segment, Motel 6 added one property, and master franchisor Realstar reports that new Motel 6 units will open in Moncton, NB this summer, and in Brandon, MB this coming winter. Choice was down two Rodeway Inns, one in Western Canada and one in Ontario.

Super 8 reports five more units were added over the past year.

 

Boutiques are hot

Boutique hotels are hot, and most of the major chains now have a brand to capture their share of this market.

Marriotts expects its Renaissance brand, which it calls a "quality-tier full-service brand providing guests with the ambiance of a boutique," to add five new properties across Canada over the next three years.

IHG added a new Hotel Indigo in Vancouver, just in time for the Olympics.

And Choice is now in the game with its Ascend Collection of unique, boutique and historic hotels. One hotel is open and two are under development in Atlantic Canada, with a possible fourth in Quebec.

 

Extended stay promising

Then there's the promise of extended stay in our under-developed Canadian market. While development largely stalled during the downtown, the majors are now poised to expand.

Homewood Suites by Hilton boasts nine units. Five more Homewoods are in the pipeline including Calgary Airport, Dartmouth, NS and Vaughan, Ajax and Barrie, Ontario.

IHG has seven Staybridge suites open, and another five in the pipeline. It plans to augment its single Montreal Candlewood Suites by two.

Choice currently has two MainStay Suites and four Suburban Extended Stay hotels under construction, plus two contracts for Suburbans which should open in spring 2011.

Realstar expects to add five Studio 6 properties over the next 3 years.

And waiting in the wings  for Canadian debuts are four more extended stay brands: Element by Westin, Hyatt Place, Hyatt Summerfield Suites and Home2 Suites by Hilton.
