Yarmouth ferry closing affects local hoteliers

YARMOUTH, NS—The high-speed ferry running between Nova Scotia and Maine has sailed its last trip, and the local accommodation industry will been hard hit.

In a town hall news conference just before Christmas, Yarmouth mayor Phil Mooney said, “As of this morning, we have calculated 189 jobs will be eliminated in the 2010 season.â€

He noted that the Rodd Colony Harbour Inn and the Rodd Grand had lost 1,000 room nights in cancellations, and that the hotels will cut 85 jobs.

He added that even the White Point Beach Resort, 95 miles away in Queens County, will be cutting eight full-time and 12 seasonal positions.

Bay Ferries Ltd. had asked the province for $6 million in funding to run the Cat ferry in 2010, but the request was turned down. The ferry runs between Yarmouth, NS and Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine.

Mark MacDonald, president of Bay Ferries, said 1.5 million people used the service from 1997 to 2009, but the number of passengers has dropped substantially from its peak in 2002.
